Halal Scanner - Dalil
iPhone app by Kamal Nasir
Halal scanner for iPhone: Dalil reads ingredient labels and E numbers and shows each ruling with the published sources it was drawn from.
What it does
- Type an ingredient or an E number and see the ruling with the sources it was drawn from listed underneath.
- Point the camera at an ingredient panel and Dalil reads each line as it comes into focus, ruling on each one and filling a ledger as it goes.
- Each reading shows the ingredient as the packet spells it, what it is with a link to the regulation defining it, and what published rulings say with a link to each one.
- A dictionary of 291 additives (E100 to E1518) and 67 ingredients. Pork derivatives, alcohol derived additives and insect colours are marked haram or mushbooh with the reason attached.
- For 11 topics where published rulings disagree, such as gelatine, carmine and vinegar made from wine, both positions are shown with the bodies that hold them, and you can set your own position topic by topic.
- No account, no sign in and no network code: it reads labels in airplane mode, and nothing you scan leaves the phone.
- The Dalil Pass adds unlimited history, exporting a reading with all of its sources, one tap ruling presets and a pantry of the ingredients you check most often.
Questions people ask
Can a halal scanner app tell me if a product is halal?
Dalil does not claim that. It reads the ingredients and tells you whether it found anything flagged, with sources, but it never says a product is halal or certified, because slaughter method and alcohol percentage are not printed on a label. A certifier's mark on the package answers that.
Where does Dalil get its halal rulings from?
Every reading links to its sources: the regulation that defines the ingredient and the published rulings it was drawn from. Dalil is an ingredient information tool, not a certification authority and not a fatwa, so ask your own scholar or certifier about anything that matters to you.
What does mushbooh mean on a halal scanner?
Mushbooh means doubtful. Where published rulings on an ingredient disagree, Dalil marks it mushbooh by default, shows both positions with the bodies that hold them, and lets you set your own position.
