Why does my iPhone say storage is full after I deleted photos?
Updated October 20, 2026 by madebykamal
Photos and videos you delete on iPhone move to the Recently Deleted collection in Photos and stay there for 30 days, so the phone gets that space back only when you delete them from there or the 30 days run out. iCloud does not add room on the phone by itself: iCloud storage and iPhone storage are separate, and photos in iCloud Photos use both, with the phone keeping smaller versions only when Optimize iPhone Storage is on. Settings, General, iPhone Storage shows what is really filling the phone.
Deleted photos wait 30 days in Recently Deleted
Apple's iPhone User Guide says deleted photos and videos are kept in the Recently Deleted collection for 30 days before they are permanently removed from your iPhone, iCloud and your other devices. Apple's ProRes article gives the same two steps for clearing space on the phone: delete the video in Photos, then delete it permanently from Recently Deleted.
To empty it now, on iOS 27:
- Open Photos and tap Collections.
- Tap Recently Deleted (below Utilities), tap View Album, then unlock with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.
- Tap Select, choose the photos and videos to remove, then choose Delete.
- Look before you clear: once items leave Recently Deleted, Apple says you cannot get them back.
Why having iCloud does not free space on the phone
Apple treats these as two different things. iCloud storage keeps your photos, files, backups and other data in the cloud. Device storage is the set amount of storage your iPhone comes with, and it is the number on the iPhone Storage screen.
Having iCloud Photos turned on does not mean your library has left the phone. Apple says photos and videos you keep in iCloud Photos use your iCloud storage and your device storage. If your iCloud storage runs out, Apple says new photos and videos stop uploading to iCloud Photos and your device stops backing up to iCloud.
What Optimize iPhone Storage does, and what it does not
With Optimize iPhone Storage on, iCloud Photos keeps the original, full-resolution photos and videos in iCloud and stores smaller versions on the phone. Apple says it is on by default when you use iCloud Photos, and that it works on demand: when the phone needs more storage, iCloud Photos optimizes the library, starting with the photos and videos you access least. You can download originals over Wi-Fi or cellular.
To check it on iOS 27, open Settings, tap your name, tap iCloud, tap Photos, then tap iPhone Storage and choose Optimize Storage. Without it, Apple says photos and videos are stored on the phone in their original, high-resolution version, which uses a lot of space.
Optimize only handles the Photos library. Apps, Messages, Media and the other categories on the iPhone Storage screen each have their own steps, below.
Where to see what is using your storage
Open Settings, tap General, then tap iPhone Storage. Apple says you will see recommendations and a list of apps with the space each one uses. Tap an app for detail: Offload App frees the space the app uses but keeps its documents and data, while Delete App removes the app and its data. Apple notes that cached and temporary data might not count as usage there.
What the storage categories mean, including system data
Apple's storage article defines each category below. The last two explain most storage that seems full for no reason: Apple describes the items in Other as non-removable, and System is iOS itself. When storage runs low, Apple says the phone frees space on its own by removing items it can download again or does not need, like unused apps and temporary files.
- Apps: installed apps and their content, files in On My iPhone in the Files app, and Safari downloads.
- Photos: photos and videos in the Photos app.
- Media: music, videos, podcasts, ringtones, artwork and voice memos.
- Messages and Mail: messages, emails and their attachments.
- iCloud Drive: iCloud Drive files you downloaded to the phone.
- Other: items you cannot remove, such as Siri voices, fonts, dictionaries, non-removable logs and caches, the Spotlight index, and system data such as Keychain and the CloudKit database.
- System: the space the operating system takes, which varies by device and model.
What to do, in order
- Open Settings, General, iPhone Storage and find the largest category.
- Empty Recently Deleted in Photos so earlier deletions actually come off the phone.
- If you use iCloud Photos, make sure Optimize iPhone Storage is on and your iCloud storage is not full, so new photos can upload.
- Merge duplicate photos and videos, which Apple lists as a way to free space on the device.
- Delete Messages conversations and attachments you no longer need, videos downloaded in the TV app and other streaming apps, and old files in the Files app.
- Offload or delete apps you do not use, or turn on Offload Unused Apps in Settings, Apps, App Store.
Where Disky fits
Disky is an iPhone storage cleaner that finds identical and similar photos, old screenshots, large videos, blurry shots and the video halves of Live Photos. Nothing is ticked until you tick it, and clearing goes through your phone's own confirmation. Its receipt shows what went, what you got back, how much of the cleanup is waiting in Recently Deleted, and when your phone actually gets that space back. It can also compress a video instead of deleting it.
Disky does not empty Recently Deleted for you, return space that lives in iCloud, clean another app's cache or speed up the phone.
Questions people ask
How long do deleted photos stay on iPhone?
30 days. They sit in the Recently Deleted collection in Photos, then are permanently removed from your iPhone, iCloud and your other devices. You can recover or permanently delete them at any point before that.
Why does my iPhone say storage is full when I have iCloud?
iCloud storage and iPhone storage are separate, and photos in iCloud Photos use both. The phone only keeps smaller versions when Optimize iPhone Storage is on, and it optimizes when it needs room, starting with the photos you open least. If iCloud is full, new photos stop uploading.
If I delete a photo on my iPhone, is it deleted from iCloud too?
Yes, when iCloud Photos is on. Apple says a photo you delete is removed from every device where iCloud Photos is on and you are signed in to the same Apple Account, and you can recover it from Recently Deleted for 30 days.
