Does iPhone have night vision?

Updated October 3, 2026 by Kamal Nasir

No iPhone has a true night vision or thermal camera. Every iPhone from the iPhone 11 on has Night mode, which brightens dark scenes with a longer exposure, and Pro models from the iPhone 12 Pro on add a LiDAR scanner that measures depth even in total darkness. Night vision apps work with those same parts, so it helps to know what each one can and cannot do.

What real night vision is

Classic night vision goggles use an image intensifier tube: it gathers the little light around, including near infrared light from the moon, the stars or an infrared lamp, and amplifies it thousands of times onto a phosphor screen, which is why the image is green. It still needs some light; in a sealed, unlit room it shows nothing.

Thermal cameras work differently: they read the heat objects give off, so a person stands out against a cooler background with no light needed. Many security cameras light the scene at night with infrared LEDs the eye cannot see.

What the iPhone camera can and cannot do in the dark

The iPhone's cameras record visible light, and Apple's technical specifications list no thermal or night vision sensor among the iPhone's sensors. So an iPhone cannot see heat, measure temperature or photograph a room with no light in it. An app that shows a heat view on an ordinary iPhone is applying a colour palette to the visible image.

Face ID is a partial exception: Apple says the TrueDepth camera projects thousands of invisible dots, captures an infrared image of your face and works even in total darkness. It is built for a face at arm's length, though, not for looking around a room.

How to use Night mode on iPhone

Night mode is the closest thing to built-in night vision. Apple says it turns on automatically when the camera detects a low-light environment, on iPhone 11 and later, and the Night mode icon at the top of the Camera app turns yellow while it is active. Depending on how dark the scene is, the capture takes a moment or several seconds, and you can choose Max for a longer exposure.

The one sensor that sees in total darkness: LiDAR

Pro and Pro Max iPhones from the iPhone 12 Pro onward carry a LiDAR scanner beside the cameras. It sends out its own invisible light and times how long it takes to bounce back, which gives the distance to each point. Apple says it measures objects up to 5 meters away and works indoors and outdoors. Because the scanner supplies its own light, it works in a pitch black room. What it produces is a depth map, not a photo: shapes and distances without colour or fine detail.

Apple uses it mostly behind the scenes, for faster autofocus in low light, Night mode portraits and augmented reality. Seeing the depth map itself takes an app.

What night vision apps actually do

Night vision apps for iPhone take one of three routes. Most brighten the live image and tint it, often green, which helps in dim light but cannot create detail where there is none. Long exposure apps keep the shutter open to gather light for still scenes and the night sky. LiDAR apps on Pro models show depth in complete darkness.

Kamera Pro has fourteen live night lenses, including classic green night vision, graded from the ordinary visible-light image, and on Pro models a LiDAR lens that draws a dark room as measured distance and measures between two points in meters or feet. Its colour lenses brighten what the camera can already see; they are not infrared or thermal.

Questions people ask

Can an iPhone camera see infrared?

Not as a night camera. The rear cameras are built for visible light. The infrared parts that do exist, Face ID's TrueDepth system and the LiDAR scanner, serve face recognition and depth measurement.

Does the iPhone 17 Pro have night vision?

It has Night mode and a LiDAR scanner, like every Pro model since the iPhone 12 Pro, but no night vision or thermal camera. Apple's specifications for the iPhone 17, iPhone Air and iPhone 16e list no LiDAR scanner, so those models have Night mode only.

Can I turn my iPhone into a thermal camera?

Only with an add-on thermal camera that plugs into the phone. Apps alone can apply heat-look palettes, but they cannot measure temperature without a thermal sensor.
